PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT

11 AUGUST 2018

The SEATeach program increased my knowledge of other culture's pedagogies. My observation period in Bu Yugi's and Bu Tati's classes helped me to gain creative ideas on what and how to teach in order for students' to have meaningful learning. Truly, pedagogies have shifted from a teacher-centered to a student-centered approach. Over the years, teaching has been evolving and teachers must adapt to these changes. The 21st century demands a variety of skills that our students should learn.

TEACHING METHOD

Bu Yugi and Bu Tati use cooperative learning methods such as Discovery Learning (DL), Problem-based Learning (PBL), Project-based Learning (PJBL), and Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD). With these methods, students become active learners and discoverers of learning.

In Bu Tati and Bu Yugi’s classes, students are given more time for group discussion. After the teacher presents the lesson, she then gives the Lembar Kegiatan Peserta Didik (LKPD), a worksheet that students must answer as a group. For Mathematics, the teacher gives a problem set, and students will be the one to generalize the topic at the end of the LKPD. Once all the groups are done, there will be a presenter/s to share their answers to the class and give the general principle, concept, or formula. If time permits, the teacher will give the Lembar Tugas Peserta Didik (LTPD). This is like a quiz or practice exercises that students will answer individually to see if they were able to master the topics. After which, the teacher will give an assignment as reinforcement and preparation for the next topic.

LEARNING MATERIALS AND INNOVATION

Bu Yugi and Bu Tati usually present their lesson using a powerpoint presentation. Before they teach how to solve problems, they present pictures of real-life applications about the topic in order for the students to see its relevance in their lives. They also use video clips to visualize different mathematical concepts.

ASSESSMENT

The usual form of assessment is through the use of the pen-and-paper test. Bu Yugi and Bu Tati usually give pen-and-paper test for Grade 9 students to train them how to solve faster in preparation for the National Examination. The pen-and-paper test helps students to master the procedures on problem-solving. Other forms of assessment are group discussions and presentations. Each group is given real-life problems or cases that they need to solve and present in front.
